Beyond Documents: Unlocking the Power of Structured Data with Origin Integrations
When most people think of Origin, they think of documentation. And that makes sense - over the past 5 years, our Documentation product has become the industry standard for automating bond issuance documentation.
But documentation is only half the story. The real value comes from what sits underneath: structured data. And the biggest opportunity lies in how that data can flow - cleanly, consistently, and automatically - into the systems that power our clients’ businesses and the wider market infrastructure.
For too long, capital markets have been weighed down by manual keying, re-keying, and reconciling across multiple platforms. We’ve made it our mission to change that.
Building the Connectivity Layer
Over the past few years, we’ve invested heavily in building out our integration capabilities. These integrations span both internal client systems (such as booking systems and treasury management platforms) and external market infrastructure (including IPAs, CSDs, exchanges, and data providers like Bloomberg).
Through this work, we’ve developed a flexible suite of connectivity options that we tailor to each client’s needs:
● API – Direct, real-time connectivity. Clients can hook into our API endpoint, or we can connect to theirs.
● SFTP – A reliable option where structured data files (JSON, CSV, etc.) are delivered securely into a client’s environment.
● Direct download from the platform – For clients who want to get started quickly without internal development resources, we’ve built custom booking and reporting file formats that can be downloaded and uploaded directly into downstream systems. Not quite “straight-through processing,” but still a huge leap forward from manual transcription.
Speaking the Right Data Language
Every client and every integration partner has slightly different requirements when it comes to data formats. That’s why Origin supports a broad range of standards:
● Airbrush, our own standard (first developed in 2021, now on V3)
● Clearstream’s D7, which aligns with the ICMA’s Bond Data Taxonomy (BDT) and the ICSDs’ IPT standards
● Custom formats, which are built to spec for individual clients
This flexibility means we can meet clients where they are, while also contributing to the evolution of industry-wide standards.
Live and Running
These aren’t just ideas - we’re already live with clients and partners across the market. Some examples of live implementations we’ve built:
● A large SSA issuer is automating their bond and swap bookings via a dedicated SFTP server we’ve set up.
● A retail structured notes issuer is booking directly into Murex via a custom file format we developed.
● Across our external integrations with IPAs (DB, HSBC, BNY), exchanges (LSE, LuxSE, Nasdaq), Clearstream, and Bloomberg, we use a mix of API, SFTP, and sometimes even email to ensure smooth data flows.
Why This Matters
For clients who want to automate documentation and transaction management, thinking about integrations is essential. Without them, automation is only half complete - once the docs are prepared, you still need to spend time mindlessly entering data into a wide variety of systems. All the benefits of standardisation and automation could be lost with just one transcription error. However, by building out the integrations from the document directly into your systems, you unlock the full value proposition: speed, accuracy, and scale.
You don’t need to make big commitments / investments on day one. Any deployment is best done step-by-step: starting with a proof of concept, proving that the Documentation automation works well for the relevant transaction types, before starting to invest in the integrations. There's no point investing months in system integration if the platform doesn't deliver the expected value or adoption.
Origin has deep experience in this space - both in building integrations, as well as in shaping the broader conversation around bond data standards over the past five years. We’re proud to have launched the discussion when we released Airbrush in 2021, and we’re happy to help contribute to the work that industry bodies such as ICMA and the ICSDs are doing to create a widely recognised bond data standard.
If you’re looking to go beyond document automation and truly unlock the power of structured data, we’d love to talk.
